The real danger to dogs and cats from rodent bait is secondarypoisoning from eating a poisoned rodent. What that means forproduct choice in Auckland.

The short answer

The significant risk to pets from rodent control is secondary poisoning, meaning the animal eats a rodent that has already taken bait, rather than eating bait directly from a station. That risk is far higher with second generation anticoagulants such as brodifacoum, which persist in the carcass. In households with pets, trapping or a first generation product is usually the better choice.

Primary versus secondary poisoning

Primary poisoning is a pet eating bait directly. It is the risk people worry about and it is the one most easily controlled: bait goes into lockable tamper-resistant stations, secured in position so they cannot be moved or opened by a dog or a child, and placed where pets do not go in the first place.

Secondary poisoning is a pet eating a rodent that has taken bait. This is the risk that actually causes most incidents, because it cannot be engineered away with a better station. A poisoned rat becomes slow and disoriented before it dies, which makes it considerably easier for a cat or a dog to catch, and it may die in the open.

The distinction matters because the two are managed completely differently. Better stations solve the first. Only product choice or method choice solves the second.

First and second generation anticoagulants

Anticoagulant rodenticides fall into two broad groups. First generation products such as diphacinone and coumatetralyl generally require multiple feeds and clear from the body relatively quickly. Second generation products such as brodifacoum and bromadiolone are effective from a single feed and persist in liver tissue for a long period.

That persistence is what creates the secondary poisoning problem. A rodent that has consumed a lethal dose of brodifacoum carries a substantial residue, and anything that eats it receives that residue. In New Zealand this matters beyond pets, because morepork, kārearea and other native predators eat rodents too.

Second generation products have their place, particularly in commercial and industrial settings where the alternative is a failed programme. In a suburban Auckland back garden with a cat, a dog and a community trap line in the street, reaching for them by default is poor practice.

Why this matters more in Auckland than most cities

Auckland has an unusual density of urban community pest control. Predator free groups, residents' trap lines and council-supported programmes operate across a large number of suburbs, and the specific purpose of that effort is to protect native birds by removing rodents and mustelids.

Introducing a persistent second generation anticoagulant into a street where that work is happening cuts directly against it, because a poisoned rodent that dies in the open is available to exactly the birds the trapping is protecting.

Practical guidance if you have pets

Tell whoever is treating your property about every animal in the household before the visit, not on the day. It changes method rather than paperwork.

Consider trapping as the primary approach. It removes the secondary poisoning question entirely because the carcass is recovered, and it has the additional benefit of not leaving an animal to die inside a wall.

If bait is used, insist on lockable tamper-resistant stations secured in position, and get a map of every placement so they can all be recovered afterwards. Unrecovered stations are a genuine problem months later.

Know the signs and act fast. Anticoagulant poisoning in a dog or cat may not show for several days and presents as lethargy, pale gums, unexplained bruising, blood in urine or faeces, or bleeding that does not stop. It is treatable with vitamin K1 if caught early. If you suspect it, go to a vet immediately and take the product label or packaging with you.

Is a bait station safe if my dog cannot open it?

It removes the primary risk, which is your dog eating bait directly. It does nothing about the secondary risk, which is your dog eating a poisoned rat. That is the more common cause of incidents, and the only ways to manage it are choosing a less persistent product or trapping instead.

What should I do if my dog ate a dead rat?

Bait in a secured lockable station is not accessible to a child, which is why that is the standard. The realistic risk comes from loose bait, from supermarket products used without a station, and from stations that have been moved.
