Ant control in Auckland, using transfer bait rather than spray
Ants are the pest people most often try to handle themselves, and the pest where doing so most reliably makes things worse. The reason is that the ants you can see are a tiny fraction of the colony, perhaps a few percent, and killing them changes nothing about the nest that produced them.

The short answer
The two ant species that cause most Auckland problems, the Argentine ant and the white-footed house ant, both form very large colonies with many queens. Spraying them with a repellent product kills foragers and triggers budding, where the colony splits and relocates, so the problem multiplies. Non-repellent transfer bait, carried back and shared with the queens, is the only method that actually reduces the colony.
Worse, most retail ant sprays are repellent by design, because a product that visibly drives ants away sells well. Applied to a trail of Argentine ants or white-footed house ants, a repellent barrier fragments the colony into satellite nests in new locations, which is how one line of ants across a bench becomes four lines in four rooms.
Auckland's problem species
The Argentine ant is small, light to mid brown, moves in dense, fast, well-defined trails and does not fight neighbouring nests of its own kind. That last point is what makes it serious. Instead of competing, adjacent colonies merge into a single interconnected supercolony that can extend across multiple properties and whole streets, which is why treating one house in isolation often disappoints.
The white-footed house ant is the black ant with pale feet that most Auckland households actually have. Colonies are very large, frequently in the hundreds of thousands, with numerous queens, and they nest happily in wall cavities, roof spaces, under pavers and in pot plants. It responds well to the right bait and very badly to spray.
Darwin's ant and the southern ant also turn up regularly, and both bud readily when disturbed. The practical consequence is the same across all four: identify, bait, and keep repellents away from the trail.
How transfer baiting actually works
A non-repellent bait is formulated so that foraging ants find it attractive, carry it back to the nest, and distribute it through the colony by trophallaxis, the mouth to mouth food sharing ants use to feed one another and the brood. The active ingredient is deliberately slow acting, because a bait that kills the forager before it gets home has achieved nothing.
This means the first few days can look like failure. Ant numbers on the trail often rise before they fall, because you are watching recruitment to a food source. That is the treatment working, and the single most important thing you can do is leave the trail alone. Do not wipe it, do not spray it, do not clean the bench with disinfectant along that line.
We also match the bait to what the colony currently wants. Ant colonies shift between carbohydrate and protein feeding depending on brood stage and season, and a sugar bait offered to a colony in a protein phase will simply be ignored. Where we are unsure, we place both and read the response.
Ants in the kitchen, ants in the bathroom, and what they are telling you
A trail heading to a bathroom or a laundry rather than to food is normally about water, and it often points at a slow leak behind a cabinet or a failed shower seal. Ants foraging in a wall cavity around a hot water cylinder are usually there for warmth and moisture together.
Ants farming aphids or scale insects on a citrus tree or a hedge beside the house are being fed by that plant, and the honeydew supply will keep a colony resident regardless of what happens indoors. When we find that, we say so, because treating inside while the outdoor food source is untouched is a short term result.

How much does ant control cost in Auckland?
A single trail with one entry point is usually $145 to $195. A whole of house treatment covering interior and exterior with a return visit runs $260 to $390. Established multi-nest problems, which is what Argentine ant supercolony conditions produce, sit between $400 and $620 across two or three staged visits. We quote in writing after seeing the property.
Why did the ants get worse after I sprayed them?
Because most retail sprays are repellent, and repellents cause budding. The colony detects the treated zone as hostile, splits, and establishes satellite nests elsewhere, each with its own queens. One trail becomes several. This is the most common reason we are called, and it is completely reversible, but it does make the job longer.
There are more ants since you baited. Is it not working?
It is almost certainly working. Non-repellent bait attracts recruitment, so foraging numbers rise for the first two to four days while the colony carries it home. Numbers then fall away as the bait reaches the queens and the brood. Please do not wipe or spray the trail during that period, because that interrupts exactly the process you want.
Can you get rid of Argentine ants permanently?
Honestly, not in the way people mean by permanently. Argentine ant supercolonies extend well beyond a single property, so what we achieve is sustained control of the population using your building, not eradication of the colony from the neighbourhood. Where a street is affected, coordinated treatment across neighbouring properties works far better than any one house treated alone, and we will tell you when that is the situation.
Is ant bait safe around children and pets?
Bait is placed in cracks, in cavities, behind appliances and in enclosed stations rather than open on surfaces, and the active ingredient is present at very low concentration because the formulation depends on the ant surviving long enough to carry it home. We will show you every placement and note them on the treatment record.
Why are ants coming into the bathroom when there is no food?
They are after water. A bathroom or laundry trail very often marks a slow leak behind a cabinet, a failed shower seal or condensation in a wall cavity. We treat the ants, but we will also point out the moisture source, because in that situation it is the actual reason they are there.
Do ants damage a house?
The species common in Auckland do not eat timber the way termites do, so structural damage is unusual. They will nest in wall insulation and roof voids, they occasionally cause problems in electrical enclosures and appliances, and large colonies in a wall cavity can produce a persistent smell. The main issue is contamination and nuisance rather than damage.
