The short answer for Glenfield
Glenfield is built around a network of bush gullies running down toward the Kaipātiki catchment, and a very large number of properties back onto one. Those gullies hold permanent rodent populations with unbroken cover, so the suburb's rodent work is almost entirely about the boundary between the bush edge and the house.
The bush is an asset and nobody should be removing it. But it is also continuous cover from a permanent population straight up to the back fence, and the practical work here is about what happens in the last few metres.
The last few metres from the bush edge
Ship rats move along cover rather than across open ground. A property with lawn between the bush edge and the house is in a substantially better position than one where the planting is continuous, even though the two may be the same distance from the gully.
The specific things that bridge the gap are boundary hedging running toward the house, mature shrubs planted hard against cladding, fence lines with dense growth along them, firewood stacks against a wall, and branches reaching toward the roof or the gutter. All of them are fixable and none of them require removing anything from the gully itself.
Where properties are steeply sloped, which many here are, the subfloor at the downhill end is often high enough to stand in, and it is a comfortable, dry, sheltered space with direct access from the bush side. We inspect those as a priority rather than as an afterthought.

A good deal of Glenfield's housing is 1970s and 1980s brick veneer with a tiled roof, and that construction has one very consistent weakness for us. Concrete and clay roof tiles are not a sealed surface, the gaps under the ridge and along the barge boards are frequently open, and the roof space beyond is generous and undisturbed.
Rats reaching the roof, whether by branch, hedge or the brick veneer itself, have a straightforward route in under the tiles. Purpose-made ridge and eave closures deal with it permanently, and it is one of the more worthwhile pieces of exclusion work available on this housing type.

No, and please do not. The bush is not the problem, the bridge between the bush and your house is. What we look at is boundary hedging running toward the building, shrubs planted against the cladding, firewood stacked on a wall, and branches within reach of the roof. Fixing those changes the situation substantially and leaves the gully alone.
Rats are getting into the roof of our brick-and-tile house.
That is the most common Glenfield job we do. Concrete and clay tile roofs have open gaps under the ridge line and along the barge boards, and once a rat is on the roof it walks straight in. Our subfloor is huge because of the slope. Is that a problem?
It is worth inspecting properly. A tall subfloor on a sloping Glenfield section is dry, sheltered, undisturbed and often has direct open access from the bush side, which makes it good harbourage for Norway rats in particular. We treat it as a priority area rather than checking it last.
